Product Summary
Construction and Materials
The Selkirk brand offers a range of chimney products designed for residential applications. These systems are engineered for safety, durability, and performance in venting fireplaces and stoves.
The primary construction of Selkirk chimney systems typically involves double-wall, insulated stainless steel. This design utilizes an inner wall to contain flue gases and an outer wall for protection and insulation. The air space between these walls is often filled with a high-temperature insulation material, such as ceramic fiber blanket, to minimize heat transfer to surrounding combustible materials and maintain optimal flue gas temperatures for efficient drafting.
Materials commonly used in Selkirk chimney construction include:
- Inner Wall: Stainless steel, chosen for its resistance to corrosion from acidic flue gases and its ability to withstand high temperatures.
- Outer Wall: Typically a more robust grade of stainless steel or galvanized steel, providing structural integrity and external protection.
- Insulation: High-quality ceramic fiber blanket is a standard choice for its excellent thermal insulation properties at elevated temperatures.
- Connectors and Supports: Various stainless steel components are used for joining sections, securing the system, and providing wall or ceiling support. These can include wall bands, storm collars, roof flashing, and ceiling support boxes.
The specific configuration and materials can vary depending on the type of chimney system, such as:
- Class A Chimney: Designed for solid fuel appliances like wood stoves and factory-built fireplaces. These systems are engineered to meet stringent safety standards for high-temperature operation and clearances.
- Type B Vent: Used for gas appliances. These vents typically feature a lighter gauge metal construction with air channels for ventilation, designed for lower operating temperatures compared to Class A systems.
Selkirk chimney systems are designed for ease of assembly, often employing twist-lock or snap-lock mechanisms for secure connections between sections. This modular approach allows for flexible installation paths, accommodating various rooflines and interior designs. Components are manufactured with precision to ensure airtight seals and proper functioning.
Options-Styles
Selkirk offers a variety of style options designed to complement any home's aesthetic for their chimney systems. These options focus on the visible components of the chimney system, primarily the termination and any interior finishing elements.
The available style options are primarily dictated by the type of termination cap or screen chosen and the materials used for any interior finishing. Selkirk provides a range of finishes and designs for their chimney caps, which are the visible crowning element of the system extending above the roofline.
- Cap Styles: Different cap styles are available to suit various architectural preferences and functional requirements. These can include options that offer a more traditional look or those with a sleeker, more contemporary design.
- Screen Options: For certain applications, screens may be integrated into the cap design. These screens are often designed to prevent animal or debris intrusion while maintaining airflow. The style of the screen can vary, impacting the overall visual appearance.
- Material Finishes: While the core chimney system components are typically constructed from durable metals like stainless steel, exterior finishes for visible sections can offer aesthetic variations. These finishes are designed to be weather-resistant and visually appealing.
For interior chimney applications, the style options are generally related to how the chimney pipe transitions into the room or how it is framed. This can involve considerations for the surrounding materials used for finishing the opening where the chimney passes through a ceiling or wall. The focus here is on integrating the chimney seamlessly into the interior design of the home.
